I'm new to sci-fi, huge fan growing up, read many classics. The novel I'm developing will take place on another planet in the future, but will focus almost entirely on "normal life"; that is, apart from the fact that the population is originally from Earth long before, the story will focus on the everyday lives of those living there now. There's very little that will take place that will greatly differ from our lives on Earth now, except that obviously I will have fun w/the flora and fauna there. That's a long introduction to my request for any sci-fi writing podcasts where I can learn about the ins and outs of world building that might be appropriate to my situation. I'd also be interested in good books on world-building as well. (No fantasy elements whatsoever; no magic system, etc.) Thanks for any suggestions!

"Imaginary Worlds" has many episodes that deal with this, usually (iirc) with interviews with writers and tv show people.

I like this Brandon Sanderson one for its humor:

He favors the cardboard set approach as opposed, I guess, to the Tolkien approach.

The Tolkien approach is to go very deeply into your world and invent things that will never be shown or used in the books. I think Tolkien invented languages and of course he had maps.

The cardboard set approach is more commercial. It is to only invent things that will be shown or used and not bother with the rest.

The 'Our Opinions Are Correct' podcast does a great job exploring both science and science-fiction; episode 124 is on building a fictional planet from scratch and if you look through their archive there are other great episodes. (129 has some great ideas for worldbuilding details relating to everyday gadgets and gizmos.)

The Writing Excuses podcast is more broadly speculative in focus, but they have a HUGE back-catalogue of episodes and there's bound to be something more scifi related in terms of worldbuilding.
