John Herbert Varley

born Austin, Texas: 9 August 1947

John Varley is an American writer of science fiction novels and short stories.

He originally planned to be a scientist but dropped out of college and took a variety of odd jobs before he decided to become a science fiction writer. His first sale was Picnic on Nearside (1974). His style has been compared to Robert A Heinlein.

He is best known for or his novella The Persistence of Vision (1978). Most of his work was published in the 1970’s and 80’s when he was described as the “most significant new writer”.

During the 1990’s, he worked in Hollywood, and the film Millennium (1989) screenplay was based upon his short story Air Raid (1977) (and novel Millennium (1983).)

He returned to writing novels in the noughties with the Thunder and Lightning series and Slow Apocalypse (2012).

He has recently suffered from health problems and has not published anything new since 2018.
