Lloyd Biggle, Jr.
born Waterloo, Iowa: 17 April 1923
died Ann Arbor, Michigan: 12 September 2002
Lloyd Biggle Jr. was an American musician, a mystery and science fiction author, and an oral historian. His narratives frequently included themes of music and art, and he is recognised for introducing aesthetics into a genre that traditionally concentrated on science and technology.
During WW2 he was wounded twice, the second leg wound left him disabled, and he was awarded a Purple Heart. Biggle was the first secretary-treasurer of the Science Fiction Writers of America and chaired its trustees for many years.
His first published story was Gypped in Galaxy (1956). He is another author who regularly appears as an answer to queries in our SFF Chronicles Book Search forum, and although most of his stories are out of print, they are available as ebooks. He is probably best remembered for his short story anthologies, The Rule of the Door and Other Fanciful Regulations (1967) and The Metallic Muse (1972), for the novel, All the Colors of Darkness (1963), and the novella, The Tunesmith (1957).
His writing explored themes such as alien invasion, matter transportation, FTL travel, memory erasure, telepathy, time travel and parallel worlds.
