This story is narrated by the severed head of an android, who has been severely wounded in a jungle war. Some cannibals (probably aliens) find the android and try to chop him up to eat. The head has an inbuilt tracking device, which draws a rescue party. The android is cheerful and amused by the cannibals' doomed attempts to eat him.

Does this ring any bells with anyone?

There is a post apocalyptic Simak novel where the head of an android is discovered or rescued. Only dim memories and I cannot recall the title. I think the story ends up on the mesa featured in Close Encounters.

No bells, sorry. But I'd love to read it.

I found it! It's called "Breakfast of Champions" (not to be confused with Kurt Vonnegut's novel of the same name) and is by Thomas Easton. It appears in a compilation called Asimov's Robots and is from 1980. The natives seem to be from Earth and are not actually cannibals. It's well-written and unusual: some of the stuff the android says about the natives would be considered insulting now, but then again, they are tearing him to bits so he's hardly going to be very respectful. The compilation itself isn't bad overall, if a bit dated.
