Good news (for me). I’ve tried both XCOM and XCOM2 and I was glad that I didn’t pay full price for these. The experience of playing was similar to staring into the cold, dead eyes of a shark. They functioned without passion.
Chimera Squad should have been called Damp Squib Squad. What a letdown.
One thing that I really detest that all these games have in common is the irritating tendency to move into a cinematic mode at certain times during combat. It’s meant (I suppose) to increase the enjoyment but, to me, it simply breaks the line of concentration.
I really, really, really hate games that do that. As soon as I see the letters RTS, I immediately move on - not interested. Similarly, if I knew of cinematics within tactical turn-based combat, I would not even consider a purchase.
I think games like XCOM should carry a message ‘Warning! This game contains annoying cinematic sequences during combat.’ At the very least, give us the option to turn the cinematics off.
Xenonauts is one incarnation of the old UFO games that I enjoyed up until the very last mission. It was almost a Goldilocks game spoiled by the final sequence that made it feel too arcady as wave after wave of aliens appeared to overwhelm and prevent you completing the mission. Needless to say, I got very close but never completed and, despite a generally enjoyable experience, gave up in frustration.
Will they get it right this time around? Xenonauts 2 comes out on July 18th and, guess what? I might even pay full price for this (depending on initial reviews).
