The Great Allan Quatermain Read at Chrons -- Weird Adventures of Rider Haggard's Hunter Hero

I just read Allan’s Wife, by Haggard. It’s a short but entertaining novel that falls by publication date between Maiwa’s Revenge and Marie. In much the same way as Maiwa, it starts with Quatermain hunting big game, and he is pretty thrilled about killing heaps of elephants. This section is less intriguing than the second section, where he encounters a lost town of marble huts, inhabited by an old Englishman, his daughter and a town’s full of natives. The girl in time becomes his wife, and the adventure stems from the near human threat of a large troop of baboons. It’s not at all bad and has some nicely memorable scenes.
