I think the name was TR Thomson. There was a race of deer-like aliens called... maybe the Hruban? Their language was plains-speech and they had a good sense of smell. There was more than one story.

On Tour With Gyes had a woman whose brain was reprogrammed because she committed a bad crime (her wages went towards reparations to a family) and she had a computer interface in her hands. The Hruban was an author, he got injured and needed the same reprogramming technology to correct some brain-damage.

All I remember from another story is that a Hruban got sick from eating too much of the ivy that was growing on a doorframe. I think they were in a Mars biodome.
