Just came across this word today: metafiction. Any one know what it means?

The construction of the language takes precedent over the story and the character. It helps to have a basic idea of the author's thought processes before embarking on reading the stories. Every word is the focus as you read because every word, every sentence has a purpose and builds the piece. It often explores the dark sides of humanity.
As much as I find him a bit of a p*ick, Will Self is probably my favourite meta fiction author.
Book of Dave is a really, really good place to start. It actually has a story, it's really funny, the premise is just plain cool and actually the characters are intense but relateable.
Once you understand where he is going with them Umbrella, Shark and Phone are some of the most mind blowing pieces of literature I have ever read.

I believe it means fiction that consciously references fiction as an abstract concept or its own fictional nature.
