For a long time I’ve maintained the cultural impact and presence of LGBTQ on the U.K. (and therefore in our writing) was far more common (whilst nuanced) than common ‘wisdom’ maintains.

This BBC article is a great comment on that and might be of interest to those writing of times past.

It’s encouraging to those of us who’ve been relegated to a simple ‘oh it didn’t exist’ by a heteronormative society for years.

 
Just to note, this is in the Writing Resources section and therefore is intended as a useful resource for writing. It is not an invitation to start debating LGBTQ+ issues, so I'll close the thread before that happens. :)
