Did anyone else love the Russian film Sputnik (2020)? I thought it was awesome. I’m a big fan of foreign films and it was executed wonderfully.

Can we make sure we have a common frame of reference when we talk about “foreign”?
This is a very international forum.

Where are you from? From where I am sitting, anything made outside the UK, specifically Wales, is technically foreign. Since that is a bit restrictive ( and would include all Hollywood productions) it is not a term I generally use.

I didn’t have a formal education, but I educated myself by reading 600+ books.

I’m burned out at the moment, truth be told.

Some the greatest science fiction and fantasy films of all time come from over seas

From the United UK

X From the Unknown 1956 onetime best science fiction films Hammer ever did. This is a very gripping and suspense fun and the musical score is unforgettable.

Quatermass and the Pit 1967 written by Nigel Kneale and one the inspirations for X Files an this ia terrific science fiction film and a classic It started life as a series of tv serial in the 1950'
part one I the Quatermass Experiment which adapted to the big screen as The Creeping Unknown. Most oof the original sis doesn't exist anymore . Quatermass II that seres too was adapted for the big screen , In both theatrical adaptations Quatermass was plead by US Actor Brain Donlevy whom Kneale disliked and he he was very unhappy with the first two Quatermass films Then is a a Quatermass and the Pit 6 part does in 1958 and can found on dvd and it's every bit as good as the 1967 feature film which Kneal wrote the screenplay for. The actor that played him in this serial was Andre Morrell and he was outstanding.

Black Sabbath 1963 outstanding Anthony Horror film from Mariso Brava

From Japan

Battle In Outer Space 1959

Mantango 1963 a.k.a Attack of the Mushroom People based the William Hoe Hodgso's story A Voice in the Night . Its a terrific horror movie

Kwaidon 1965 Japanese Horror anthology doom from ancient Ghost stories and the a re really good tales !

The Diamajin Trilogy 3 films about a giant 35 foot satire of Samuri god that come to life on a time of ned to destroy this whole threaten his follow and woe to those he comes after. Even today standards the three films impresses . In Terms os shear scariness Diamajin ranks very high on the list on the list of scary supernatural beings . 1966

The Snow Woman 1968 this a must see Japanese horror story anreven by todays standards , it still chills !

I would put the Strugatsky brothers among the greats of sci-fi.
I found Solaris hard to watch, where the long atmospheric scenes worked well in Stalker, they didn't work for me in Solaris (some did though and were very memorable)
I never made it through Hard to be a God, I'll have to give that another try.

Against all odds the library actually has a copy of both Sputnik and Stalker. Just put a hold on both and should be able to pick them up sometime this week.
