Banks said that ideally he would go out after giving the Culture one last huge book but there wasn't time given his diagnosis. Such a shame.

I would have liked to have read that.

Well, it look like you might not have to wait for too much longer. According to what the author says on the Goodreads listing for that book, it's expected out next year.
