writing out a sound within a sentence

Any ideas on a good way to write out sounds within a sentence. Here's an example (just imagine a futurey kind of bluetooth earpiece):

He heard a :ing:: in his ear.

Is that clear? Is there a standard way of doing this?

Not clear. And I don't think there is a standard.

You could consult a Thesaurus, or just oneamatopically wing it according to the sounds you hear in your mind.

e.g. a bronx cheer: "plbplbplbplb"

Either go plain with squish, or go fancy and metaphoric, a sound like a mallet through an orange, according to the style.

I do it sometimes like this:

So, with the italics and asterisks. For some reason it can seem funny to me to see that in text.

I've also done descriptions of a sound (a sloppy, squishing sound), or as Jo said, with a metaphor/simile. Might be a situational decision.

I'd go italics and spell out the sound if it is used frequently. I did this with the sound of a crossbow bolt in flight with a little imagination - they probably don't make a sound!
