Lovecraftian Short Story

Many years ago I read a short story that struck me as very Lovecraftian. After an earthquake or storm some (sailors? fishermen?) find a small island that seems to have risen from the seabed - covered with seaweed etc. On the island there's a (cave? temple? structure?) in which they find what they first think is a statue, then realize it is a person turned to stone. One of them looks into its eyes and sees an image etched into the back of its eye of a Cthulhu-like creature, the sight of which apparently petrified him.
Does anybody recognize the story? Perhaps one that HPL ghost-wrote?
Thanks for any assistance.

Dagon. The island was covered with very mucky, icky, stinky seaweed. Its one of the first short stories that got published. He wrote it in 1917, though he had written quite a bit before then.

Thanks, Robert Zwilling and hitmouse. I just re-read Dagon, and the story I remember was obviously inspired by it. I'll keep looking.
