I would say they most definitely wouldn't be an improvement. Why would you want to see through them if it wasn't for something like a HUD in a helmet or vehicle? Much like rounded edges on smartphones, they'd just be a gimmick and one that reduces the usefulness of the device at that.
They are in development and already possible. They're basically regular screens with the backing taken off. You can buy them for specific applications, mostly in signage but there is at least one commercial TV that does it.
In the case of the props for The Expanse, they look more like clear perspex with CGI over them though I suppose some could be using modified LCD screens for more static pieces.
