Earth destroyed by planet grazing. Survivors escape to asteroids

In the late 90's I read a book with the plot that the earth was closely grazed by a rogue planet. The planet was broken up with pieces falling on earth with consequent destruction of civilization. Survivors escaped to the asteroids. Plot similar to Lucifer's Hammer by Niven and Pournell, but with much more total destruction because of the planet breakup instead of a comet collision.
 
Posted previous message too quickly. I can't remember the title or author. Our library was destroyed in a house fire and I would like to find this book again if anyone can help. Thanks.
 
Whew. My sympathies about your loss. Can’t help with book search, I’m afraid.
 
Are you sure about the dates of 'late 90s'?

A year into the new millennium (so very close to the 90s) we had the Remnants series by K.A. Applegate, book one -The Mayflower Project - has a plot like you describe
