I think she’s trying to raise money to help her mother (?) and I remember the author saying the girl was powerful in her invisibility because of her skin colour. The psychological experiments become more damaging and divisive but she keeps going because of the money...

Sorry, this feels like a terrible description. It’s driving me nuts, this book sounded much better when I heard about it in the author interview! Any ideas welcomed
