(Found) Looking for novel about a mechanical Grim Reaper replacing traditional one

I read about this in Starlog--had to be before 1995 since I ran out of money to buy the magazine, so I would say early 1990s for sure.
All I remember about this novel was that the Grim Reaper was being replaced by a mechanical version and there was some critique about it lacking the "personal touch."
Sorry, no other details! I only vaguely remember the cover--it was the plot that intrigued me.

Reaperman by Terry Pratchett has a similar plot, but the mechanical nature of the replacement is not a major plot point.

Yes, Pratchett's Reaperman is a possibility but that the replacement is mechanical is incidental.

It's possible it was incidental, maybe I just focused on that part of the story description.

Starlog 183, from October 1992 has a review of Reaper Man on page 21 which includes the phrase "mechanical grim reaper"
