(Found) Book boy unknowingly destroys enemy spaceships, thinking it is a game

I cannot think of the name of the book for the life of me! The boy thinks that he is training but at the end you learn that he was actually commanding real spaceships.

They made a movie of this story a few years ago as well. I prefer the book because you really see him growing up and developing over the years of his childhood.
