Recently moderators have removed posts, edited others, and even locked a thread because of political comments. Since newcomers to Chrons might not understand the rationale for such action, here’s the explanation.

We have all manner of people here, covering a spectrum of sexuality, ethnicity, faith and political opinion. Obviously, we want everyone to feel welcome, so we’ve always required members to be civil – we don’t ridicule or insult fellow members, and we don’t tolerate trolls and rudeness. But we must also protect the community as a whole, not only the individuals within it, hence we have little patience with members who maintain a veneer of courtesy but whose conduct is disruptive.

Because issues such as religion and abortion can become very heated very quickly, comment about them has always been banned, but other socio-political matters could be discussed in a World Affairs forum. For the most part threads there were polite and respectful – we ensured members argued the issue, rather than disparaging others with different views. Even then, though, some members felt their opinions were belittled and they left Chrons.

Unfortunately, in late 2016 the tone in World Affairs changed, reflecting a growing polarisation in real life, with threads veering towards conflict and confrontation. Trolls appeared, perhaps encouraged by the contentious atmosphere, undoubtedly contributing to it. That belligerent tone infected the rest of the site, with animosity and arguments on socio-political matters cropping up in other areas. As mods we seemed forever to be fighting fires.

The aim of Chrons has always been to celebrate our shared interests, but political discussion brought only division, poisoning community spirit. Finally, to protect the Chrons’ ethos, in March 2017 the World Affairs forum was removed from the open boards in its entirety and all political and socio-political comment was banned (ie including discussion of gender, sexuality and racial issues). It was regrettable, but it was necessary. And it worked. The atmosphere lightened and unpleasant incidents became few and far between.

Because of the profound impact of Coronavirus on everyone’s lives, we thought a thread on the subject would act as a safety valve, allowing members to vent. But governmental decisions and their ramifications are simply too political and potentially divisive to allow it to remain.

More than ever, the world is a frightening place for so many people, and we’re relentlessly bombarded with dire predictions, loud voices, conspiracy theories, stupidity and acrimony. Chrons is a necessary haven where the door is firmly shut on such things. Perhaps, for some members, the only haven they have.

Our collective mental health is being tested as never before. We all have a responsibility to help each other through this, and first and foremost that means Chrons must remain a safe haven. It also means remembering we don’t know what hardship, loss, grief and worries other members are experiencing and which affect their interactions here.

So, we ask all members to abide by the Chrons commandments:

Be kind.
Be generous.
And, where socio-political issues are concerned, be silent.
.

This thread is locked because, to be blunt, we're not looking for feedback on this issue. This is an explanation of a requirement, not a topic for discussion.

If you're not sure what is encompassed by "political" and "socio-political" and you're worried a comment might fall foul of the Chrons' commandment, contact a mod and ask for guidance.

If you think another member has contravened the commandment, or is in any way rude, abusive or derogatory, don't respond to it, report it, using the button on the left of a post.

And remember -- be kind.
