I can't believe I missed this one: "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" by Joyce Carol Oates is recommended by fans of eerie realism. It's been called an allegory for losing virginity. A creepy man in a gold convertible pretends to be much younger and tries to tempt the heroine to leave with him on some kind of date, threatening to do violent things if she doesn't oblige him.
