Anecdote within a Sci-fi novel, about a pet rabbit trying to bond with disinterested cat. Reminiscent of Brin's Uplift Wars romance.

Sorry I can only recall this story within a novel by a major author, I think from the 1950s to 70s. In the context of building a bond between people of two races, One character telling another about a pet rabbit trying to entice a cat to bond, e.g.building a nest, hoping to make them both part of the same tribe. Told in a very poignant way. I wonder if it was in Brins Uplift War romance between the young human and the Tymbrimi female, but more like something by Asimov or Heinlein. Thanks for anything you can think of!

I'm pretty sure that this isn't what you're after, but if I remember correctly, it sounds a bit like the section in Watership Down, where Hazel's talking to the caged rabbits on the farm, before they spring them from their cages so they can joint the new warren.
