A couple of years ago I bought a small clockwork toy that happened to be of the Lost In Space robot (my all-time favourite robot). It's only 4 inches in height and it was bought simply as something to practice painting with. Finally, I've gotten around to doing it.
First, I rubbed down the body and masked the clear parts. Then I airbrushed the body in steel. The rest was all handpainted and I found for the finer parts, the tip of a cocktail stick worked better than a brush.
It's not perfect but I think it's an improvement
