Ship wrecked ,dying astronaut saved by crystal aliens. They upgraded ,changed his organs with crystals..

This is going to really frustrate me. I've read something that could well be the book in question. If the one I'm thinking of is right the main character is changed while in space.

Meanwhile can you give any more details? Memorable plot details, cover, was it new or nearly so in 1993? Part of a series? Any info would help those who are a lot better than this than what I am.
 
This sounds very much like Sentenced to Prism by Alan Dean Foster, except it wasn't a shipwreck, it was a troubleshooter sent to investigate an unresponsive research station.
