I read the book in 2006. From the vague recollection I have, there was a character named Ethan. There might’ve been something in the plot about something happening to the parents of the kids in the neighborhood/school.
There was a weapons system that was worn on the hands/arms of the people that mutated... grew golden colored fur and muscles (if I recall correctly).
An alien strain of some kind might’ve been involved.
I read it when I was 12 for school, so I’m not sure if it’s a science fiction novel for teens, or a more general audience.
