Lugubrious in what way? If it's the plot, I don't have a problem with that. I actually enjoyed the doom-and-gloom of Seveneves very much.

I felt that Stephenson got bogged down with the philosophy in Reamde, which was otherwise quite interesting. Seveneves was overlong, gripping at times, but I found the denoument a bit of a let down.
