The Side facing the sun would cook and be rendered inhospitable and the side facing away would freeze and also become inhospitable .

Wasn't there a fantasy/sci-fi story based on a world like that, with a temperate middle zone and everywhere else being frozen/molten?

I think Asimov has used that idea twice, Thaddeus, but about Mercury.
Once in one of the I Robot (or Rest of the Robot) stories, and once in one of the Lucky Starr childrens books.

There was a planet like that in the old Star Wars EU. I forget which novel it appears in.
