I would suggest that if your beta readers complained about those initialisms, then cut them down or eliminate altogether.

Bit harsh. I only cut down or eliminate beta readers if they complain about my characterisation.

They are easily trained: no need to go out and execute them all.

There's an interesting point about acronyms. Some become so ingrained in the language that they start being treated as words, and then derivations are made.

I think the best example is "laser". It used to be written LASER, which stands for the horrifically complicated "light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation". (Also, this illustrates the point that some words' initials are often missed out of acronyms.)

Now: Laser sounds as if it might mean "something that lases" even though that is definitely not its derivation. But within the last decade or so, that appearance has led to the invention of the word "lase" which means something like "emit light by stimulated emission".

At this point, I figure I need all the beta readers I can get.

I did mean the initialisms.
