Driving Me Crazy

Can't think of the title of this really good, gothic sort of horror film from the 1980's, and therefore haven't been able to look for it on Youtube, etc. It was about all these various, weird nocturnal creatures, who generally stay hidden from humans. A young man discovered them, however, and one of them bit him, turning him into one of them (these aren't vampires). The one who bit him eventually shows the (no longer) human the "prophesies", painted on a wall where the creatures dwell, and one of the drawings clearly shows the creature biting (and thus "turning" the human). Obviously there is much more to the movie, but does anyone know what the NAME of the movie is?

Could be helpful to know where you saw it....TV, theater, on videotape? Can you be more precise than just one decade? Any hope to perform a Google Images search and spot the face of one of the actors? Was it British, French, American?
