Sci fi novel, (possibly dystopian). Man is sent to a distant planet when one of their 4 colony members dies.

I read this novel around 5 or 6 years ago. It's about a colony of four people who are faking their deaths so that more people will be sent out and they can start their own society, free fro. Modern technology. One of the most memorable aspects was the description of what space travel does to the human body including elongation lims and major weight loss. There were also long detailed paragraphs about how pieces of technology worked. The main character was a man, there is little else to say about him.
