I read a book, I believe around the early 2000's. It began with a young boy in a marketplace having a meeting with a mysterious figure called a Pilot (female) who can navigate through nu space or q space or something similar. It takes place in a world far from earth. The world is made up of a series of levels. The boy somehow goes up or down a level and is adopted by the ruling class. He learns all sorts of metaphysical and philisophical knowledge. As he grows up war breaks out and he helps command his side of the war. At some point he becomes disillusioned with the way of the war, and escapes down to the lowest levels of this world. I believe he opens a Dojo there and trains others in martial arts.
It was a paperback, I remember the cover of being mostly dark green and black. There might of been a face on it as well as the outline of part of a ship.
