There were people smuggling chimps in modified gas tanker trunks. Rich people could have their bodies reset to an earlier age but some people lost this due to sabatuers. One cult leader had his mind wiped to become a martyr.

That's true. I've read that book (although many years ago) and I didn't recognise it from your clues. I just about now remember the martyr thing. Anyway, glad you found it.
