(Found) Sci-Fi - On a seemingly dead planet, consciousness of an ancient alien civilisation are are held within silver liquid .

Planet has electrical storms and killer environment, a colony is formed and liquid is found and the cilivisation is revived by use of humans, the aliens previously tried to ward of a killer asteroid with their powers? but now they try again by basically taking over enough humans. The books follow stories of other people on otherplanetss within a grouping of planets perhaps known as the Crown Jewels? I can't remember and google has come up dry.
