While I don't think Rowling is history's greatest prose stylist, she is extremely successful, honest and sensible. Here are some pieces of writing advice from her.

On Writing - J.K. Rowling

I remember reading an interesting analysis of Harry Potter by David Farland (he's one of the reasons it became big I think, after he pushed it in the US). He acknowledged the boarding-school-wizard-thing had been done many times before, but thought Rowling had done it better than anyone, and also that it had market potential in terms of the cast of characters and their ages.

This quote is relevant to the Exercising imagination thread:
"Robert Benchley’s words: ‘It took me fifteen years to discover I had no talent for writing, but I couldn’t give it up, because by that time I was too famous.’"
