I've searched for this book for years now. I read it in the 90's and it's about an entity that comes to our universe to fight a scourge of evil spiderlike creatures. They're called something like zotyl or kytel... something like that. These creatures also mount humans with no head, and very basic primal brains where the neck would be, to get around

This is probably one of the books in the Radix series by A A Attanasio

Radix (1981)
In Other Worlds (1984)
Arc of the Dream (1986)
The Last Legends of Earth (1989)

I don't know about invading from another universe, the the spider-like creatures who ride headless human-like creatures sounds a lot like the Kaldanes who ride Rykors, in The Chessmen of Mars, by Edgar Rice Burroughs.

@royheil Re: Chessmen. I need to have another look at that. I have completely forgotten the story. Is that the one that might have been written by ERB's son?

I don't think ERB did other universes in his Barsoom stories, as you say.

I don't think so. I have never heard of his son writing this book, and it is one of the earlier books in the series (5th of 11).

And no, Chessmen is not about another universe. It takes place on a less-explored region of Mars.
