It’s a hard choice. I love Capaldi as an actor (when he does a speech, especially, seriously excellent, like the one in the War Room, or to the Master duo) and I liked his grouchy, standoffish Doctor that had an iron clad commitment to duty of care. But yes, unfortunately the episodes he was in weren’t always very good.
I’m enjoying Jodie as she feels like a new breath of fresh air, enjoying her more lighthearted ways, her genuine enthusiasm for everything and her ‘go team!’ ethic, but I am still waiting to see the more serious side.
And so it’s still Matt Smith for me. He was a perfect mix of professor/mad man/slapstick comedian. I remember exactly when I knew he’d be good, it was in his very first episode where he bent towards young Amy and said “Come along, Pond.” He had that feeling of someone very old and wise inside a young, crazy body (and if I recall correctly, after saying that he promptly turned and walked into a tree).
