Hi, newbie here,
I'm trying to track down a sci-fi novel published in paperback in the late 70s/early 80s about a remote, frozen planet that has some sort of research station on it, as well as oceans (possibly methane?) with large animals that I recall were like whales, only very little is known about them. I think there is no land, only ice, and the main characters are scientists. Definitely not Asimov or Heinlein, but in the hard-ish vein, not about war, but I think more about personal demons and an unknown environment. I may well have these details muddled with a half-dozen other books, but any help would be much appreciated.

Were they giant 'cat-whales'?

It's not Ben Bova's Jupiter is it? There's a space station around the planet, and they travel through the gas giant's liquid exterior where they observe leviathans. Its hard science stuff too.

Lots of suggestions here, but the OP hasn't commented on which is right, so maybe we'll never know :) I still think its Jupiter by Bova.

A somewhat poor guess... Pandora's star by Peter Hamilton.
It has Ozzie joining in an ice whale hunt with the elf like Silfen aliens
