Star Trek: Lower Decks. An Adult Animated Comedy

"The men who replace the yellow cartridge in the food replicators so that a banana will come out the other end."

This made me think of Lister and Rimmer fixing the chicken soup vending machines...

I really hate goofiness mixed with my sci-fi. I can stand a little light comedy but I think this will be more sitcom than Star Trek.

You could be very right about this. I doubt they'll be able to match the level of the first two series of RD, however.

@Vince W

I was never a big fan of the tribbles or of Mudd. Not on in TOS and certainly not on Discovery. 50% of all the ferengi episode on DS9 were just if not more goofy. Which was weird because otherwise it was the most serious Trek. I liked DS9's tribble episode better than the TOS version because overall it was less silly.

So, has anyone watched this? I thought I might give it a try. I thought it would need a new forum, but it doesn't look like you think much of it? SFX magazine like them.

There was a TNG episode called The Lower Decks but that was quite serious IIRC a crewmember died. I think Stargate or Babylon 5 did an episode about the maintenance staff but not particularly funny either. They may both have done so, my memory is a sieve. If this is written by the head writer of Rick and Morty then at least it won't be slow.

I've been watching it, and I'm about to start the final episode of the first series.

There are some genuine laugh out loud moments - a couple of the cold opens are great, the title sequence amuses me, and some of the jokes really hit the mark (often good-natured ribbing of events or tech from previous ST shows and episodes) - but overall it's good, not great. Episodes with B and C plots fall flat (with the C plot usually being the most interesting!), however there have been a couple of episodes that really shone, including S1E9 which was fantastic from start to finish.

Overall, it doesn't reach the heights of either Rick & Morty or any ST series, and is miles behind something like The Orville, but I'd say if you're a ST fan (or, at least, have watched a few of the different shows and liked them), and enjoy sci-fi comedy that can be goofy, then it's a decent addition to your list. It's better than Discovery and Picard, at any rate.

EDIT: Oh, well-scored, too.

I've seen the first episode. Nothing 'laugh out loud' but better than reality TV. There is a definite 'Rick and Morty' feel to both the action and dialogue, but it is still Star Trek (there having been many different kinds of flavours available already). It's better than Star Trek: The Animated Series. I'll have to watch more before making any decision on how good it is, but the 'Admiral's daughter' idea was done in both Voyager with Tom Paris, and in John Scalzi's Redshirts, so I find that a little unimaginative. The reason we don't see viruses transmitted to ships is because of the Transporter Biofilter, not because we never see Second Contact take place. Other than that it seemed to involve a lot of first dating.

I've seen a few more, and this is a very fair review.
I saw two episodes. Pass.
They get better. The later episodes are better than the earlier. Maybe skip a few.

I'm afraid I can't do that, Dave. He, he. I've been waiting years to use that line. Actually, Dave, I started watching at the beginning of the fourth season. Adult humor? Doesn't that mean that I'm supposed to laugh? Once again. Pass. (But thanks for the thought, Dave.)

Without ever seeing it, I'm getting the impression this is the Avenue 5 (HBO--worst series I've seen by... light years :rolleyes:) of Star Trek.
