Trying to find a book I read in early 90s, probably published a lot earlier than that. Something to do with a city(possibly City in the title) and had metal eggs (or described as egg-shaped) keys. One if the secondary characters was a tall/thin man, main characters were children. I don't recall names. Cannot recall if it was a series or not, definitely not part of the Tripod series.

As I read this I kept thinking Michael Grant's Gone series but been a few since I read them and cant remember metal eggs
Gone is quite a bit newer, but it sounds like a fun series. Thanks!

I don't think this is right because I can't remember any egg shaped keys, but Simak wrote a book called City - a series of interlinked tales about the end of mankind as seen through the eyes of one family and their dog. Brilliant read.
