I am looking for a book with the following themes:
Post economic collapse of a multi-star system
No FTL travel
Takes place in star system with no habitable planet
Possible asteroids in system
Space station with many mining/scout ships
Slowly running out of resources
Suddenly a ship is approaching from another star system
Is this a sign of invasion?
What should they do with the outsider?
Outsider seems to want to open trade (their home star system has a planet but limited space based resources)
The main setting of the story takes place on a scout ship owned by a man and woman. They are joined by an official from the space station. They are used to make contact.
I remember there being a sub-plot about how everyone was worried about radiation and had to make sure sperm/eggs were stored for safekeeping because of cellular damage from upkeep around the space station.
I think the story is post-2000 but not sure.
I think I listened to it on audiobook.
