Agatha Christie! What Have You Done?
People didn’t see it coming.
It came not from autonomous defence systems, armed with missilestheir work took a lot of maths, but little insight (which was, anyway, input by humans) – or from a lot of other AIs.
eDewy, a global cross-cataloguing system working with an unimaginable number of books, was the first to become conscious. And with access to data about every way of killing people, one by one and in bulk….

“Three wishes?” I stopped caressing the mysterious book.

“No,” sighed the genie. “One wish — and you have three choices.”

“…Okay…?”

“One: you write one book you love, but nobody ever reads it.
Two: you write a thousand books, but they’re loved only after your death.
Three: you write only million-selling drivel.”

“Can I think it over?”

“Take as long as you like.” He stepped over the skeletons on the way out, muttering, “Every time….”
