So I remember the lead character has a big nose that he finds out his grandfather also had - I know his girlfriend/love interest was a girl named Kat (Or Cat, as I only read the audiobook). The VR is created by a guy who calls his company "The Company", but he can't leave the VR world and has actually created "children" which are hybrids of him and the creatures that populate the world. The interface has progressed to a "cap" that you wear on your head, and once you're in you can't remove it - it was originally supposed to be to help coma patients, but the military is abusing it. I will add more details as I remember, but it's driving me crazy not remembering!! Please help!!

Possibly one of the 'Demi-Monde' books by Rod Rees?
