This was a military war sci-fi novel. It starts out in the future where earth is fighting an alien enemy. Our squadron is chasing the enemy who (can't remember exactly how) go back into time before space travel.. In this running battle we finally destroy the alien ships but at the cost of our own chasing fleet. Our last fighter has a woman pilot who has to eject into the ocean. She is rescued by a (former?) naval officer who finds her. She convinces this man over time the danger earth will face in the future. Also she has some sort of symbiot in her that helps heal her and also makes her heavier than a normal woman her size. This couple fall in love and at the end, he is dying and she "infects" him with her symbiot so he lives.
