His science fiction connection was playing The Tollmaster in 'Delta and the Bannermen' (Dr Who with Sylvester McCoy)

Went to one of his shows in Wolverhampton a few years back.

Memorable joke:

My show us very educational. Only last week a woman leaving the theatre was heard to say to her partner ‘Let that be a lesson to you.’

I never found Dodd remotely funny, even when I was kid back in the 70s. But my parents loved him, and would often laugh themselves to tears when they saw him on the box or in concert.
