I use ghostery and privacy badger, not much gets past those for chrome I gave up using adblocker because its one of the most popular so some ads specifically target it.

If you are not already investing in an adblocker do so. your internet bandwidth will thank you.
If you like the adverts you can always enable them for pages you wish to support.

Just to let everyone know that I've copied over a new style based on the SFFchronicles theme - with the only difference being that the ad code is not present.

I've named this new version "SFFchronicles - ad free".

So hopefully anyone having problems with the ads test can now use the ad-free version of their normal theme. :)

So far I've not had any problem with the ads, but their choice of what they show me has me baffled. Yesterday I got an ad for Audible, understandable; and ads for books like "G Spot" and "Hot Thongs!" Seeing as I don't go to pornographic sites and my reading is basically Thriller/Mystery and SF with an occasional Fantasy thrown in I don't get it.

I browse the forums primarily on my phone rather than desktop. The ads are very intrusive on mobile. I've had a mix of full screen, pull down from top of screen and on one thread an advert between each post plus at one point all three at once. I've not checked the content as I've learned to ignore that part of them.

However, @Brian G Turner, if you need them to help fund the site it certainly won't stop me visiting but it may deter newbies.

It's probably the word fantasy that's the problem....:D

@Brian - not quite sure how you use the SFFchronicles - ad free - as in what do you do to get there?

Other than that, in terms of income, do you get paid for the number of people you show the adverts to? Or only for people clicking through?
What I am asking, is if I block ads, will it loose you money?

@Montero - go to the bottom of the page where the red bar lies. On the left hand side is the page style, SFFCHRONICLES, or whatever.

If you click on that style, you'll get a style chooser box pop up.

I'm simply running a test - I'm not counting on any income at all, and any income actually received is likely to be minimal anyway. However, I figured if Google were launching a new ad setup that it would be worth at least seeing what it actually does to see whether it's worth factoring into any future development of chrons. :)

Thanks Abernovo. I almost never go that far down the browser and didn't even know about the style thing. Just took that text as a repeat of the name. Live and learn.

Thanks Brian.

Incidentally, as I type this, there is an advert below the box I am typing in - "Download the new Opera browser. Block ads. Automatically." :)

Thanks, Brian. No ads now, thank goodness. They were getting in the way of thread posts too, making it difficult to find things.

Adverts seem to be positioning okay within posts, but they're over forum links and my avatar on other pages. I'm browsing with Chrome on a Windows desktop.

I welcome adverts as long as they're not autoplay videos, the sort that expand when you're trying to read something (like on IMDB) and/or ridiculous in number plus all of the above (like my local newspaper - a website I now avoid). I've worked from home for a couple of days recently, so I'm getting re-targeted adverts for the companies I've worked for.

For anyone who is unhappy about adverts setting cookies, you can disable third-party cookies in your browser, which saves installing an adblocker: How to Block Third-Party Cookies in Every Web Browser

For some of the forums a system where the adverts are related to the content could work well i.e. George R R Martin and similar books (maybe novel authors here like yourself) in his part of the Chrons.

Is it possible to bump the position of everything to make room for the banner.
Please no.

The Grauniad site used to do that for ads at the top of the screen. Many's the time I clicked on one link to find that the screen had moved as I clicked, and I was led to somewhere else... which meant going back to the original screen and waiting while the ad that had shoved the main page down to do so again before clicking again.

A damned nuisance, that's what it was.
Or you could just do a blank space the size of the ads.
The Grauniad tried to do that... but, in many cases, allocated too small a space, so the screen content was moved down anyway.

Please excuse me being thick but how do I access the ad free site? Google doesnt seem to bring it up.

Can you post a link?

Mobile phone browsing is disconcerting at present since posts are interspersed with ads in Chrons style for Mature ladies who always say yes. I assume they are not selling orange juice (same disclaimer as Parson on this sort of thing. )

If you're currently on your mobile, scroll down to the redish bar near the bottom of the page -- if should say sffchronicles on the left, and contact us and help on the right. Click sffchronicles and it'll bring up different options, one of which says ad free.
