I don't think it's really about the size of the undertaking, it's the fact that the Tolkien Estate can't decide on what is and what is not canonical in The Silmarillion

That's probably a large part of it too, but there's also just so many different sub-stories going on in the Silmarillion that I'm sure that doesn't help matters either. Still, I'd love to see it done. Definitely far too much for films, but it could make an amazing series or mini-series.
