The Earth might leave the petty regulations of the Federation of Planets so that it could have trade relations with the Romulans and Klingons get control over their own affairs back.
Or maybe the last economic thing forcing people to live on regulated planets ends.

They live in a socialist future without the need for money or population control. A world in which any 'thing' made from matter can be replicated from energy, and in which energy is cheap, plentiful and made very simply, by combining an infinite supply of space-collected matter and antimatter, in a chamber made from abundant and freely available crystallised dilithium. Their ships travel through sub-space destroying its fabric as they pass-by (see TNG episode.) Really, what could possibly go wrong with this ideal world?

Not wrong - better.

They still seemed to be limited in the number and possession of ships, and they mostly live on planets, limiting the places that people can live and the type of defense they require. Maybe the Federation people will eventually choose to live other places and get there with their own ships.

What about a series with a earth merchant ship not a federation ship but a ship on duty to send and pick up important material across the universe?

Here is my crazy idea, a federation ship gets stuck in a unstable wormhole and unable to exit. The come across a temprol psyhic eddy. They find that they can take over bodies of people in federation and its allies but in the past. They must manipulate them with out damaging timeline to find a way to escape. The tech they have access to is primative compared to where they come from, so they have to be careful of what can do!

Type of problem: The people they control can die in the wrong situations, so is it ethical to leave them high and dry cause they could die being linked! Do you kill someone cause they find out? Just a small sample of issues to deal with.
