I've been rubbing my hands over which of the "Letters of..." books to get first. Of the Hippocampus Press book series, which ones provided the most insight into the writer's craft? Anyone have their favorites?

I haven't read them all (in fact, I have an embarrassing number of them sitting unread), but possibly the REH/HPL correspondence or the letters to Bloch and other young fans.

The two volumes of letters with Derleth are almoft entirely concern'd with ye writer's craft. Augie is sometimes rather severely critical concerning tales such as "The Dreams in the Witch House" and some few others, and may have help'd to heighten Lovecraft's displeasure with his own fiction.
