What if star trek was a novel first/

how would a star trek novel do if it was released before the series/

Diehard fans would complain that the best bits were left out.

I've read a couple of novelisations, but I was never very impressed.

I doubt it would have amounted to much. Star Trek is a visual medium that replaces the richness of a written world with scenery, models, costumes, effects and actors. The actual bones of the show is incredibly basic, SF wise.

And I don't see that as a criticism. Different media, different strengths.
