A book I read in paperback in the late 1980's (book was a lot older poss 70's), purchased from a car boot sale. It contained cowboys, androids/humanoids and space wars/ battles. Centered around one person (hero) and illustrated his change from a human to an humanoid, almost like a waking sleep. If i recall it started off as a gun slinger and centered around that , then chopped to him being embroiled in a mystery and how he became part man and part robot (battalized mech-robot) and battling enemies in a space war ..for some reason i have the name "Sloane" in my head. He was used because they needed someone with his skill's etc.

anyone out there got any ideas?

Sorry but I don't comprehend the waking sleep thing -

'The waking sleep'aspect I believe is to do with the main character, being in a dream state, revolving between battling aliens, and fighting in the Wild West. To me it was suggesting he used recall to remind of his humanity and his specialist skills.

Think I've found it..."Loane Sloane" but was sure the book I read wasn't a graphic novel

I've been looking and the translations to English for the Lone Sloane books do indeed appear to be graphic novels. I thought someone might have also written them into a story format but no luck in my hunt

I did a quick google looks like Amazon may have them (translated editions)
cant post links but check out wiki, and amazon

See the trouble is I am pants at online searching.. much happier letting things spin through my memory for hours or even days , and then google just to confirm my recollection or to see how to spell an authors name etc
