Slade Prison in Mourning

For me he will always be "Grouty" from Porridge.

That said, Peter Vaughn had a rich and varied career in tv and film, as well as the stage. He was the kind of man I could envisage doing Shakespeare, especially Hamlet and Henry V.

RIP

I was surprised to see he was only in three episodes of Porridge, just shows the impact of the character.

The menace was palpable, whether his character was making a threat or not.

A really great actor, superb in 'Brazil.' RIP.

He was also exceptional in the BBC's 1981 adaption of 'Lord Of The Rings,' where he played Denethor. Chills up the spine if you've not heard him in it.

Good call!

I remember listening to LOTR on the radio back in the early 80s. Both he and Peter "Gollum" Woodthorpe , were the highlights for me; and listening to Vaughn's Denathor, reminded me of why he was such a good stage actor.
